The Diversity project at Becoming a Doctor aims to fill the longstanding gaps left in our often unequal healthcare system and medical education.
The project is a collaboration of doctors, medical students, other healthcare professionals and patients. We’re going to be working together to produce resources and events relevant across the medical curriculum that aim to increase representation and understanding of health issues in all groups of people- not just the standard euro-centric, male, cisgender, heterosexual able bodied model we are used to.
As well as producing new work- we want to promote resources produced by other groups, and make sure resources we are producing consolidate overlooked knowledge and fields rather than re-producing the amazing work that is currently being done.
Furthermore, we want to help create a national voice for the growing number of local campaigns seeking to diversify and decolonise the medical curriculum across the UK. Part of this is helping collaborate and liaise with a number of groups doing the work already and empowering these voices. We will also be assisting groups in their advocacy and lobbying of key stakeholders to enact real, practical change.
Our work will be starting with our Becoming a Doctor Diversity Resources Survey. Our aim is to create an analysis of the feedback in this survey, and with it to create more resources aimed at gaps in the curriculum.
To do this we need YOU-medical students-to help inform us of the state of diversity in medical education.
This survey will be open till the 7th December 2020.
